There is a theory that the body has a set point (weight) that it tries to maintain, appropriately called the “Set-Point Theory."

Think of the body like a thermostat.

When you consume fewer calories while dieting, your body reacts by slowing down its basal metabolic rate (metabolism) and signals more hunger signals.

Both of these (decreased metabolism & increased hunger) happen in an attempt to conserve energy and cue the body to eat more to maintain its weight.

The body wants to maintain homeostasis as it does not like change.

The end result?

You can stay the same weight while eating fewer calories
