Unpacking Psalms 23, a Benefit to Exercise & (Non) Numerical Health

1)

Psalms 23 says,"The Lord is my Shepherd; I lack nothing." Other translations say "I shall not want" & "I don't need a thing." Most people assume this solely pertains to their physical needs (shelter, food, water). But it also pertains to your mental, emotional, relational & spiritual needs as well.

Because, in Christ, all your needs are met.

  • Physical – manna from heaven; loaves & fish to the masses; wine for the wedding; the ability to walk for the lame
  • Mental – truth about who we are in Christ: I am perfectly loved by my Heavenly Father (rather than what culture says about you "I am what I have," "I am what I do," "I am what others say about me")
  • Emotional – "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalms 34v18)
  • Relational – "Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." (Romans 8v15-16)
  • Spiritual – by following the One who emulated it, we too can "lose our life" for the sake of "finding it" (Matthew 16v25)

Remember, wherever your needs are met is where your identity lies.

Studies have shown that 30 minutes of moderate exercise is the equivalent to a low-grade antidepressant.

Health is more than a number.

Your weight on the scale (number), your BMI (number) & how many calories you eat (number) are important, just not the end-all-be-all.

Health also includes . . .

  • the status of your marriage
  • your daily levels of joy
  • how well you sleep
  • your ability to combat lies with truth
  • how often you mentally rest
  • your relationship with Jesus

Do your best to look through all lenses, not just one.
